Where Are They Now: Jenny Kate, Leadership & Counselor 2018-2021

Happy New Year, Camp Friends!

I have been busy finishing up my senior year at the University of Tennessee since the end of Summer 2021! I am majoring in Child and Family Studies with a minor in Psychology. Working at camp helped me discover my love for promoting resiliency in kids in low-income communities. It also helped me figure out my long-term goal of wanting to be a school social worker. Camp helped me cultivate a lot of my seemingly random interests into a job, and I feel that social work does the same thing for me. I have recently applied to a couple of different Master’s of Social Work programs and am waiting to hear back about my acceptance. Prayers for this process would be greatly appreciated!

When I’m not at camp, I work at an after-school program in Knoxville called Thrive. Thrive is a nonprofit ministry that serves four different low-income neighborhoods across the city. Their goal is to partner with communities to promote spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional well-being in our students. I teach kindergarten and 1st graders and absolutely love it! I have worked here for about two years and have used many of the skills I learned from camp in this position. Most importantly, I gained a lot of confidence in my ability to share the gospel in a way that kids can understand.

I feel so blessed to have been a part of God’s plan for so many kids’ lives at camp and

Thrive over the past four years. I also, of course, incorporate a lot of the silly games I learned from camp. Overall, camp equipped me with a lot of the skills I need to work at Thrive and for the future.

I am so thankful for my time at camp. I not only developed tools to help me succeed in my career, but I also have gained so many lifelong friendships. Camp has truly changed my life, and I am so thankful for my four years here. If you have the opportunity to work at Camp in the Community, do it! It continues to be one of the best decisions I have ever made!
