Daily Scripture: 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! 11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. (Matthew 2:11a)
Background: The three wise men were middle-eastern kings who traveled to visit Jesus in Bethlehem. Here, Matthew is most likely referencing these gentile kings' wisdom by including astronomy, the study of stars and other heavenly bodies. These wise men already knew so much about the stars and the night sky that when an angel told them a star would guide them to baby Jesus, they knew what to do.
The wise men had to travel really far to get to Jerusalem. Bible scholars think that it was at least 400 miles! This would have taken them over two weeks if they were riding camels and over a month if they were walking. By the time they got to Bethlehem, Jesus was already at least a few weeks old, and his family was staying in a house, not the barn.
Devotion: Jesus is often referred to as the “King of the Jews.” And this is true; the Jews were the chosen people of God. However, in this story, three gentile kings are coming to visit Jesus and bring him gifts. They were so happy to have been invited by the angel to go and see the Messiah. The Bible tells us they were “filled with joy!” Jesus is not just for one group of people. The wise men did not share the same religious beliefs as their Jewish neighbors. They had a different culture with different values, but Jews and Gentiles did share was a joy for Jesus coming. It can be easy to be sad or angry when people don’t understand us or share our beliefs in our lives. But isn’t it exciting to know that we all can have joy knowing that Jesus came to this Earth for all of us, and He loves each of us as we are.
Mealtime Conversations: What do you think it was like for the wise men to see Jesus. Can you imagine how you would feel if you saw Jesus so young with His mother, Mary?
Advent Calendar Reflection: Take a moment to think about someone who has been helping you or others during the pandemic. Write a prayer to ask God to bless them and keep them safe.
Advent in Action: The wise men were so excited to be invited to meet Jesus. We make other people happy when we invite them to things. Following COVID-19 precautions, invite someone to do something with you. This could be a phone call, a video call, or visiting someone through a window!

Puede ser fácil estar triste o enojado cuando las personas no nos comprenden o no comparten nuestras creencias en nuestras vidas. Pero, ¿no es emocionante saber que
todos podemos tener alegría sabiendo que Jesús vino a esta Tierra por todos nosotros, y nos ama a cada uno de nosotros como somos?
