Daily Scripture: 19 Then the angel said, "I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to bring you this good news! (Luke 1:19)
Background: The angel Gabriel, who visited Mary and Joseph, is God's messenger angel. He brings important news or prophesies to people throughout Scripture. Gabriel is the same angel who appeared to Daniel when he was in the Lion's den. He has been around for awhile, but the messages he is bringing about Jesus is his most important message of all.
Devotion: God creates angels for his purposes. Throughout Scripture, Angels have had a variety of jobs to do on behalf of God. Gabriel was given a very important job to do! His job was to tell those on Earth who needed to know about the birth of Jesus. God placed a lot of responsibility on his angel to bring this important news.
Because of how important God's people knew Gabriel was, they were very afraid when they saw him appear. Just like how we feel sometimes when someone in charge appears where we aren't expecting. We might assume we are in trouble for something. Gabriel always said something comforting when he appeared to let people know they had nothing to fear.
Because God is all-powerful and all-knowing, many people have seen him as someone to be afraid of, instead of someone who loves us. Even people in the Bible got confused and thought God was out to get them or watched them waiting for them to make a mistake. But that's not the God we see in the story of the birth of Christ, and that's not the message God is trying to send us.
God is strong, powerful, mighty, and he uses that strength to love us when we are difficult, bring us joy when we are feeling down, give us hope that we have a good future ahead, and show us how to
love others in that way.
In this story, God is using Gabriel to share about his biggest, strongest act of love in sending us Jesus. We needed to learn from Jesus' teaching, we needed to see how he walked, we needed to know that he could live on Earth without sin, and most importantly we needed him to save us from ourselves. That's a lot of love for God to do all of that for us!
Gabriel must have felt honored and excited to share this great news! What an honor it is that God invites us to share this great news as well.
