Week Theme: Peace
Lighting the Fourth Candle of Advent: The fourth candle of advent is purple, and represents Peace! Peace allows us to see the world around us through God’s eyes, knowing that even during trials, God is with us. God’s peace is like a deep breath when you feel like you can’t breathe. We have peace because we know God has a good plan for us, and we don’t have to worry for one second about that. Jesus represents that peace to us, and the angels let the shepherds know they could count on God’s
peace on earth (Luke 2:14). The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom, and its deeper meanings include harmony between people, a feeling of wholeness, and an understanding that God is taking care of us. It is a peace that has been paid for. Traditionally, Shalom was said when greeting someone or when saying goodbye.
Today, thank God for giving us peace, and as you do, light the first purple candle for hope, the second purple candle for love, the third candle, which is pink, for joy, AND the fourth candle, which is purple for peace.

Daily Scripture: Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11b)
Background: The wise men knew that Baby Jesus was the messiah, the King that they had been waiting for. The wise men were also kings, so they brought with them gifts that would normally be given to a King. Gold is a precious metal. That means it is very valuable, and not something people would see every day. Wealthy people and kings would have it added to their clothes and jewelry and show it off in their palaces so that people knew how rich and important they were.
Devotion: We cannot know for certain why the wise men brought the gifts they did. They may have been practical things that Jesus and his family would need, or they may have been symbolic. Maybe it was both. We know that the gold was not a gift they simply picked up along the way to Bethlehem. The wise men brought it from their own homes. It is unlikely that they had to borrow it or that they got it in Jerusalem.
In our culture today, we have our own gifts that we present to Jesus. Songs we sing about him, helping out a friend or neighbor, and showing love to the people in our lives. We probably don’t have something expensive like gold. But God accepts all of our gifts when we give them out of a pure place in our hearts.
Sometimes we can feel like we do not have enough to offer or are not the smartest or the richest, or the most talented. But the wise men brought the best that they had to Jesus. We can do the same thing. If we do our very best for God, then we also have peace knowing that we are enough for Him, and He never thinks we are less.

Encendido de la cuarta vela de Adviento: ¡ La cuarta vela de adviento es de color púrpura y representa la paz! La paz nos permite ver el mundo que nos rodea a través de los ojos de Dios, sabiendo que incluso durante las pruebas, Dios está con nosotros. La paz de Dios es como una respiración profunda cuando sientes que no puedes respirar. Tenemos paz porque sabemos que Dios tiene un buen plan para nosotros y no tenemos que preocuparnos ni un segundo por eso. Jesús representa esa paz para nosotros, y los ángeles les hicieron saber a los pastores que podían contar con la paz de Dios en la tierra (Lucas 2:14). La palabra hebrea para paz es Shalom, y sus significados más profundos incluyen armonía entre las personas, un sentimiento de plenitud y un
entendimiento de que Dios está cuidando de nosotros. Es una paz por la que se ha pagado. Tradicionalmente, se decía Shalom al saludar a alguien o al despedirse.
Hoy, gracias a Dios por darnos paz, y mientras lo haces, enciende la primera vela púrpura para la esperanza, la segunda vela púrpura para el amor, la tercera vela, que es rosa, para la alegría, Y la cuarta vela, que es púrpura para la paz.

Trasfondo: Los magos sabían que el Niño Jesús era el Mesías, el Rey que habían estado esperando. Los sabios también eran reyes, por lo que traían consigo regalos que normalmente se le daban a un rey. El oro es un metal precioso. Eso significa que es muy valioso y no es algo que la gente vea todos los días. Las personas adineradas y los reyes lo agregaban a sus ropas y joyas y lo mostraban en sus palacios para que la gente supiera lo ricos e importantes que eran.
Devoción: No podemos saber con certeza por qué los magos trajeron los regalos que
trajeron. Pueden haber sido cosas prácticas que Jesús y su familia necesitarían, o pueden haber sido simbólicas. Quizás fueron ambos. Sabemos que el oro no fue un regalo que simplemente recogieron en el camino a Belén. Los magos lo trajeron de sus propios hogares. Es poco probable que tuvieran que pedirlo prestado o que lo consiguieran en Jerusalén.
En nuestra cultura actual, tenemos nuestros propios dones que le presentamos a
Jesús. Canciones que cantamos sobre él, ayudando a un amigo o vecino y mostrando amor a las personas en nuestras vidas. Probablemente no tengamos algo caro como el oro. Pero Dios acepta todos nuestros dones cuando los damos de un lugar puro en nuestro corazón.
A veces podemos sentir que no tenemos lo suficiente para ofrecer o que no somos los más inteligentes, los más ricos o los más talentosos. Pero los magos le llevaron a Jesús lo mejor que tenían. Podemos hacer lo mismo. Si hacemos nuestro mejor esfuerzo por Dios, también tendremos paz sabiendo que somos suficientes para Él, y Él nunca piensa que somos menos.
Conversaciones a la hora de comer: Si tuvieras la oportunidad de darle a Jesús tu regalo más valioso, ¿qué le darías que tienes actualmente? ¿Qué le darías si tuvieras dinero infinito?
