Daily Scripture: "...because there was no lodging available for them." Luke 2:7b
Background: When people were travelling a long distance, sometimes they stayed with relatives. If they didn't have relatives there were places they could pay money to stay for the night.
Devotion: Imagine Mary and Joseph walking for several days. The things they owned would have been on their donkey's back. They were traveling to Bethlehem to register for the census. Mary would have been 9-9.5 months pregnant at this point, feet swollen, back hurting. They might have slept in guest rooms of relatives' homes along the way, possibly, or set up makeshift shelters to sleep on the roadside. Once they arrived in Bethlehem, it is believed that it was later in the evening. We often think of a hotel when we see the word inn or lodging in the Bible, but the word likely meant a guest room of a relative's home. After searching, there was no available place for them to stay.
We usually picture them staying in a stable, but Scripture doesn't tell us exactly where they ended up staying the night. It does tell us that Mary wrapped up Jesus and put him in a manger when he was born. A manger would have been in a place where animals were kept. In this region, that would have either been in a cave or a stable, with animals like a donkey and an ox. We don't know exactly if Jesus was born in a cave or a stable, but either way, it was a very humble place compared to where people had imagined the Messiah to be born.
But Jesus didn't come to show off all of his heavenly riches, or to tell people how important he was. His story on Earth began humbly, and from that point on he would live a humble life. He would tell rich people to give up their money and follow him. Through this simple story of his birth in a simple cave or stable, we learn that God calls us to follow his example of humility.
Jesus showed us that we can relate to his humanness, and that we don't have to be rich or live in a nice home to follow him. He shows us that he knows what it's like to have very little. If Jesus can come to Earth and live a life of humility, always pointing us to God the Father, we should try to do the same. Take time to think about all the good things God has given you, whether you were born in a stable, hospital, or a big house.
Mealtime Conversations: If you could have picked a place for Jesus to be born, what would it have looked like? Would it have been in a fancy castle, a nice hospital, or in a cave? Talk about what you think it would have been like for Jesus and his family to be in the stable/cave for his birth.
Advent Calendar Reflection: Draw a picture of what you imagine Jesus' birth place looked like. Reflect on what was similar or different from your own birth.
Advent in Action: Who do you know that has been a great example of a humble leader? Write them a nice note, or ask your folks if you could call or text them to thank them for sharing God's love in this way.

Devoción: Imagínese a María y José caminando durante varios días. Las cosas que poseían habrían estado en el lomo de su burro. Viajaban a Belén para registrarse en el censo. Maria habría estado embarazada de 9 a 9,5 meses en este momento, con los pies hinchados y la espalda dolorida. Es posible que hayan dormido en las habitaciones de huéspedes de las casas de sus familiares en el camino, posiblemente, o hayan instalado refugios improvisados para dormir al borde de la carretera. Una vez que llegaron a Belén, se cree que fue más tarde en la noche. A menudo pensamos en un hotel cuando vemos la palabra posada o alojamiento en la Biblia, pero la palabra probablemente significaba una habitación de invitados en la casa de un familiar. Después de buscar, no había lugar disponible para que se quedaran.
Por lo general, los imaginamos quedándose en un establo, pero las Escrituras no nos dicen exactamente dónde terminaron pasando la noche. Sí nos dice que María envolvió a Jesús y lo puso en un pesebre cuando nació. Un pesebre habría estado en un lugar donde se guardaban animales. En esta región, eso habría sido en una cueva o en un establo, con animales como un burro y un buey. No sabemos exactamente si Jesús nació en una cueva o en un establo, pero de cualquier manera, era un lugar muy humilde en comparación con el lugar donde la gente había imaginado que nacería el Mesías.
Pero Jesús no vino para mostrar todas sus riquezas celestiales, ni para decirle a la gente lo importante que era. Su historia en la Tierra comenzó con humildad y, a partir de ese momento, viviría una vida humilde. Le diría a los ricos que entregaran su dinero y lo siguieran. A través de esta sencilla historia de su nacimiento en una sencilla cueva o establo, aprendemos que Dios nos llama a seguir su ejemplo de humildad.
Jesús nos mostró que podemos relacionarnos con su humanidad y que no tenemos que ser ricos o vivir en un hogar agradable para seguirlo. Nos muestra que sabe lo que es tener muy poco. Si Jesús puede venir a la Tierra y vivir una vida de humildad, siempre apuntándonos a Dios el Padre, deberíamos intentar hacer lo mismo. Tómate un tiempo para pensar en todas las cosas buenas que Dios te ha dado, ya sea que hayas nacido en un establo, un hospital o una casa grande.
Conversaciones a la hora de comer: Si pudieras haber elegido un lugar para que naciera Jesús, ¿cómo sería? ¿Habría sido en un castillo elegante, un buen hospital o en una cueva? Hable acerca de cómo cree que hubiera sido para Jesús y su familia estar en el establo / cueva para su nacimiento.
Reflexión del Calendario de Adviento: Haga un dibujo de cómo se imagina que era el lugar de nacimiento de Jesús. Reflexione sobre lo que fue similar o diferente a su propio nacimiento.
