Week Theme: Peace
Daily Scripture: Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11b)
Background: Myrrh also had many uses and was often combined with frankincense to make things like medicines and perfumes. In the time Jesus lived, it may have been even more valuable than the gold.
Devotion: Myrrh was commonly used as a preservative. A preservative is used to keep things from breaking down or rotting. When given as a gift, myrrh can also symbolize how precious life is. The wise men brought myrrh as one of their gifts for the baby Jesus.
They knew how important life was in general, but specifically how important Jesus’ life was. Their gift symbolized that they knew how precious this life would be, the difference he would make for the entire world, and a reminder that life does not last forever.
Myrhh is also used for embalming someone once they have passed. This gift not only reminds us of the precious gift of life but, in some ways, it was a clue that Jesus would give that precious life so that we could all have life. This gift reminds us how important our lives are to Jesus and how much he loves seeing us full of love, joy, hope, and peace.
Mealtime Conversations: If you were in charge of giving gifts to Jesus, what kind of gifts would you bring? What kind of gifts were brought to you when you were born? Were they similar or different to what Jesus was given?
Advent Calendar Reflection Jesus was given three gifts after his birth. What gifts have we been given that have been important to us? What makes those gifts important?
Advent in Action: Take a look at the things you have. Do you have something that someone else might need or that would bring joy to someone else? Find joy in giving someone a meaningful gift.

Escritura diaria : Luego abrieron sus cofres del tesoro y le dieron regalos de oro, incienso y mirra. (Mateo 2: 11b)
Antecedentes : La mirra también tenía muchos usos y, a menudo, se combinaba con incienso para fabricar medicamentos y perfumes. En el tiempo que vivió Jesús, pudo haber sido incluso más valioso que el oro.
Devoción : La mirra se usaba comúnmente como conservante. Se usa un conservante para evitar que las cosas se descompongan o se pudran. Cuando se da como regalo, la mirra también puede simbolizar lo preciosa que es la vida. Los magos trajeron mirra como uno de sus regalos para el niño Jesús.
Sabían lo importante que era la vida en general, pero específicamente lo importante que era la vida de Jesús. Su regalo simbolizaba que sabían lo preciosa que sería esta vida, la diferencia que haría para el mundo entero y un recordatorio de que la vida no dura para siempre.
La mirra también se usa para embalsamar a alguien una vez que ha fallecido. Este regalo no solo nos recuerda el precioso regalo de la vida, sino que, de alguna manera, fue una pista de que Jesús daría esa preciosa vida para que todos pudiéramos tener vida. Este regalo nos recuerda lo importante que son nuestras vidas para Jesús y cuánto le encanta vernos llenos de amor, alegría, esperanza y paz.
Conversaciones a la hora de comer: Si estuvieras a cargo de darle regalos a Jesús, ¿qué tipo de regalos traerías? ¿Qué tipo de regalos te trajeron cuando naciste? ¿Fueron similares o diferentes a lo que se le dio a Jesús?
Reflexión del Calendario de Adviento Jesús recibió tres regalos después de su
nacimiento. ¿Qué dones se nos han dado que han sido importantes para nosotros? ¿Qué hace que esos dones sean importantes?
Adviento en acción: echa un vistazo a las cosas que tienes. ¿Tiene algo que otra persona podría necesitar o que le brindaría alegría a otra persona? Disfrute de darle a alguien un regalo significativo.
