Week Theme: Peace
Daily Scripture: 13 After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” (Matthew 2:13)
Background: After King Herod realized the wise men were not going to come back, he was angry. Since he didn’t know where Jesus was, he gave an order to have all of the boy babies two years old and younger to be found and killed. He thought surely one of them would be Jesus. God knew this was Herod’s plan, so he sent an angel to tell Mary and Joseph to go and hide in Egypt so that Jesus would not be killed.
Devotion: Everyone was waiting for the Messiah to be born. Like the wise men, some people were excited because they knew Jesus was coming to do good things on Earth. Others, like King Herod, felt threatened by Jesus because they thought he was coming to take over their kingdoms and steal their power and authority. God knew that there would be bad people looking for Jesus, so he put it in Herod’s heart to send the wise men to find him. But the wise men only wanted to worship Jesus, so they did not go back and tell Herod where he was.
Not everyone in our lives is looking out for us, but we can have peace knowing that God knows how to protect us. Just like God sent angels to warn and protect Mary, Joseph, and their new baby, He sends angels to watch over us too. God considers us all his children, and He gives us love and protection from people and things that would try to hurt us. He already knows what we need; all we have to do is ask!
Mealtime Conversations: Jesus and his family were forced to flee to Egypt in order to stay safe. How would you feel if you were forced to leave your home in order to stay safe?
Advent Calendar Reflection: Draw a picture of a time God has protected you.
Advent in Action: We can ask for God’s help in situations that are hard for us, and we learned that he would help and protect us. Ask someone how you can help them with something they are struggling with.

Trasfondo: Después de que el rey Herodes se dio cuenta de que los magos no iban a regresar, se enojó. Como no sabía dónde estaba Jesús, dio una orden para que todos los bebés varones de dos años o menos fueran encontrados y asesinados. Pensó que seguramente uno de ellos sería Jesús. Dios sabía que este era el plan de Herodes, por lo que envió un ángel para decirles a María y José que se fueran a esconder en Egipto para que Jesús no fuera asesinado.
Devoción: Todos estaban esperando que naciera el Mesías. Al igual que los magos, algunas personas se emocionaron porque sabían que Jesús vendría a hacer cosas buenas en la Tierra. Otros, como el rey Herodes, se sintieron amenazados por Jesús porque pensaron que venía para apoderarse de sus reinos y robar su poder y autoridad. Dios sabía que habría gente mala buscando a Jesús, así que puso en el corazón de Herodes que enviara a los magos a buscarlo. Pero los magos solo querían adorar a Jesús, así que no regresaron y le dijeron a Herodes dónde estaba.
No todos en nuestras vidas nos cuidan, pero podemos tener paz sabiendo que Dios sabe cómo protegernos. Así como Dios envió ángeles para advertir y proteger a María, José y su nuevo bebé, también envía ángeles para velar por nosotros. Dios nos considera a todos sus hijos y nos da amor y protección de personas y cosas que intentarían hacernos daño. Él ya sabe lo que necesitamos; ¡Sólo tenemos que preguntar!
